Unfortunately, our expensive HOB filter was too narrow to fit over the lip of the new tank. I rummaged around in our storage shed and dragged out our old Aqua Tech 30-60 filter to use until we could find something better. Not only did it fit our new tank, but it performed flawlessly even though it has been in storage for many years. I ordered another one from Amazon because we keep Cichlids and need heavy filtration. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. Aqua Tech has made some great improvements to this 30-60 filter. The biological filter is plastic, not coarse like our old filter. The canister part of the filter is streamlined. It is impossible to put the filter together wrong. And it is so quiet...much quieter than our expensive HOB filter. So, because or our success with our old Aqua Tech and the new improvements to the new Aqua Tech I ordered another 30-60 so that our new tank will have two new (matching) filters. Thanks, AquaTech. I have only changed the filter cartridge one time which required me to turn off the filter. After cleaning the pan (which was minimally dirty), and putting a clean cartridge in the filter, I plugged it in and it no longer works. I've only had it for two months. I see there's a two-year warranty so I'm going to try to get a replacement. I use this filter with a large stainless steel pan for my dogs and cats to drink out of. They love the fresh, moving water and I love how clean the water stays! I don't have to clean the bowl everyday or refill it a couple times a day either. Easy to clean both housing and filters. If you don't care about noise, I would recommend this item. WAIT...don't buy this filter. The noise got worse and is now so loud that if I'm on the phone, I have to turn the switch off! I have wasted my money and now, I have to buy a new one after only 4 months. I hate it!!!! The last one finally went after 6 years and that's great especially for a turtle tank! I love the new red filter now instead of the old black netting one. My old filter took a crap and I bought this one for its elongated tube assembly. Before I changed to this filter my water was a shade of redish brown color due to the big driftwood log I have so my turtle can have a basking spot outside the water. whiten 2 days of putting this filter in my tank the discoloration of the water has gone away and has sucked some of the dirt out of the rock bed. As all over the top filters are this one has a waterfall noise to it which is to be expected but the motor itself is not noticeable for noise at all. Due to me keeping goldfish, the extra system really helps with their water movement, and cleanliness. With that being said, the current is just fine and none of my fish get "swept" with the current. Keep in mind that these do have to be cleaned out every once in a while, per the instructions and common sense. Aqua-Tech definitely is good at updating their lines every few years to integrate something new and keep their filters top notch. I've had several of these throughout the years, and every one of them I have, are still running. I have one from the late 90's that still runs, and works great. Just clean them every-so-often and they will always work without fail. I'm only taking one star off because they removed one of my favorite features. These used to come with a user replaceable motor. Which were easy as hell to order from Aqua-Tech/Marineland. Now it's integrated into the filter itself. That's a big disappointment. Because that's what's saved my bacon a number of times in the past with previous iterations of this product. Definitely a good buy. I've noticed that the water flow has gone down dramatically since then. Almond st to a drip, as well as the motor making a loud noise as well. I've had one of these filters for a 20 gallon and only experienced this problem after 6 months. I would like an exchanges or to find out why it's not worked properly.
